NEW YORK (AP) - The price of celecoxib for arthritis pain has gone up by more than 10% this year as manufacturers fight to keep its patent on the drug, which treats rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.
A new report from the University of Florida's Institute for Drug Evaluation and Research finds that the price of celecoxib for arthritis pain has gone up by 10%, a trend that has led to a sharp increase in generic drug prices.
The report, titled "The Price of Celecoxib for Arthritis Pain," found that the average wholesale price of the drug is $15 a bottle, down from $19 in 2012. The average wholesale price for Celebrex is $9 a bottle. The average wholesale price for naproxen is $0.45 a bottle, down from $1.16 in 2012.
In the latest report, the University of Florida researchers looked at data from retail pharmacy and hospital pharmacies and found that a larger percentage of prescriptions for Celebrex for arthritis pain, the highest among the drugs, were filled through those pharmacies. The overall retail price for Celebrex is $0.84, down from $1,08 in 2012. For naproxen, it is $1.07, down from $2.16 in 2012.
"We see a dramatic increase in the number of prescriptions for celecoxib for arthritis pain," said lead author Dr. Susan A. Kasten, an assistant professor of medicine at the University of Florida School of Medicine. "This is a product that has become part of the healthcare system."
For consumers, the increase is significant. A study by the University of Florida found that the cost of a prescription drug for arthritis pain, the number of pills the drug will cost the U. S. market for the next three years, is $1.04 per prescription, up from $0.55 in 2012.
The researchers said that despite the increased use of Celebrex, the market for arthritis pain and osteoarthritis drug Celebrex is still very small.
"The drug has had an enormous impact on the marketplace," said Dr. Kasten. "We don't think there is a huge amount of information out there about Celebrex for arthritis pain. Celebrex has been the focus of some of the most aggressive marketing campaigns to date. We don't see any reason to take this information seriously."
